Where people eat out

Casual dining restaurants are beginning to rival the pub as the favourite place for the British to eat out, with younger people driving their popularity.

According to Peach Factory/Harris figures, 65% of adults will eat at a casual dining restaurant at least once every three months, with 66% choosing a pub restaurant as frequently. This compares with 51% choosing a fast food diner at least four times a year.

Pub restaurants remain the most popular eating-out destination, just. But among more frequent eaters-out, coffee shops and sandwich stores start to close the gap. In all, 25% of adults will go to a pub restaurant at least twice a month, compared with 23% visiting a casual dining restaurant, coffee bar and sandwich shop, and 19% a fast food outlet over the same period.

The under 24s are the heaviest users of casual dining restaurants, with 73% visiting at least once every three months. Pub restaurants have a slightly older age profile, with the 25-34 age group being the most frequent diners.

Fast food remains most popular with the under 24s, with 9% saying they visit at least twice a week, although 13% of the same age group will go to a sandwich shop just as often.
